Beware of Taxi Scams in Bosnia – My Experience
I had a great time traveling through Bosnia, but there’s one thing every visitor should be aware of: taxi scams, especially in cities like Sarajevo.
Some taxi drivers take advantage of tourists by advertising a “fixed price” or slipping in hidden fees like “5 KM per piece of luggage”—which you often only notice once it’s too late.
How to Avoid Getting Scammed
Avoid hailing taxis from the street. These taxis often don’t start the meter, making it easier for the driver to overcharge you. Without the taximeter running, there’s no record of the trip, and they can pocket inflated fares. They charge double or even triple the normal price, plus bogus luggage fees.
Call a taxi from an official company. When you order by phone, the driver is more likely to start the taximeter and follow standard pricing. It also holds the company accountable for service quality.
My Personal Experience
On my first day, I made the mistake of hopping into a random street taxi—and ended up paying way too much. After that, I only used taxis from official companies.
For example, when I called Žuti Taxi, the driver arrived within 7 minutes, was polite and professional, and started the taximeter right away.
📍 Trip from Baščaršija to Sarajevo Airport:
I paid around 20 KM, which aligns with the expected fare of 18–22 KM based on what I’ve read and heard.
